Barrier-free Routing

Precise indoor navigation is particularly important for travelers with limited mobility: in addition to people with physical handicaps, such as those who need to use a wheelchair or the visually impaired, this also includes passengers with heavy baggage or baby carriages. Needless to say, it is much more comfortable to travel when there are no stairs in the way and ramps or elevators are easy to find. HaCon customers like the SBB (Swiss Railways), the RMV (Rhine/Main Regional Transport Association), the VBB (Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Association) and Västtrafik (Sweden) already offer barrier-free routing in their journey planners. This makes it possible for passengers to filter their connections according to the number of transfers, accessible entries, etc.

The RMV's journey planner includes extensive descriptions regarding the accessibility during the entire route. For example, travelers can find out about ramp inclinations, size of and access to elevators and stairs with all distances described exact to the meter. This way, people with limited mobility can easily see in advance whether they can travel alone or need help along the way. The RMV's journey planner is the practical result of the BAIM research project.

Travelers in Switzerland can see the daily updated degree of accessibility for their selected connections. The SBB's journey planner indicates the concrete situation at each point of boarding or disembarking from a train and also whether prior registration is required for people seeking assistance from the service staff.

The VBB's journey planner app allows users to easily find connections that are completely barrier-free. Footpaths, track accesses, elevators, etc. are described exact to the meter.
